Earth is our home. Thousands of satellites encircle it, providing scientific findings, weather, communication and other health information. Earth is 93 million miles from the Sun—one Astronomical Unit. Earth has one moon. Scientists believe the moon was formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a large planetoid crashed into the earth.

The Moon was our first destination beyond Earth—and our first step in exploring the Solar System. The Apollo program was the first to carry people beyond Earth and to another world. Today Artemis is NASA’s effort to return astronauts to the Moon and build a foundation for future exploration. Artemis III is a test and training mission. It is scheduled for 2027. Then Artemis IV is scheduled to land astronauts near the lunar South Pole in 2028.
