Moving out to Jupiter, we are now just over 5 Astronomical Units from the Sun. So Jupiter is five times farther from the Sun than Earth. Jupiter is a gas giant. Deep inside, it may have a dense core, but it has no solid surface like Earth’s.

The largest planet in the Solar System, Jupiter is about 86,900 miles in diameter—about 11 times Earth's diameter.

Four of its moons are known as the Galilean moons because Galileo first saw and observed them through his crude early telescope.

These moons are readily visible in small telescopes or even binoculars.

Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot is a gigantic storm that has endured for hundreds of years. Jupiter, by the way, has 101 known moons as of July 2026.

Juno is studying Jupiter's atmosphere, magnetic field, and internal structure. The mission is helping scientists learn how the largest planet formed and how it works today. The spacecraft arrived at Jupiter in 2016 and has been studying the planet for over 10 years.
