Beyond Neptune begins a region known as the Kuiper Belt. It extends from just beyond Neptune to approximately 50 to 55 Astronomical Units. It contains millions of icy objects left over from the formation of the Solar System about 4.6 billion years ago.

Pluto is one of the largest objects in the Kuiper Belt. Farther out is Eris, a slightly smaller but more massive dwarf planet in a region called the scattered disk. The discovery of Eris was a major factor in astronomers creating a formal definition of a planet. It also helped lead to the creation of a new category, the dwarf planet, which included Pluto.

Other recognized dwarf planets in the Kuiper Belt include Haumea and Makemake, while Ceres in the Asteroid Belt is also classified as a dwarf planet.

New Horizons flew past Pluto in 2015 and later explored another Kuiper Belt object, Arrokoth. It has now traveled beyond the main Kuiper Belt and continues outward into the distant Solar System.
